Gastronomy
Food and its preparations play a very important role in the daily lives of people from this area. It is commonly termed as falling under the three S’s – Sencilla (simple), Sabroso (tasty) and Sana (healthy) and is a large contributor to the overall and well known gastronomy of Andalucía.
The extensive culinary delights from Berja have their base in those dishes common to the Lower Alpujarra district, mixed with some more rare ingredients only traditionally used here. But whatever your choice – traditional, or the Berja specialities, you can delight of all the area has to offer in any one of the numerous ‘tapas’ bars and restaurants.
Some specialities always on offer: migas con tropezones, choto al ajillo, gachas colorás, sopa de ajo, el asao, cocido de hinojos, judías y cardos, ajillo, ajo blanco,… And for dessert: talvinas, pan de higo, merengues al horno, pestiños, leche frita, buñuelos, pan de aceite, roscos, magdalenas,…
Giving further exposure to the fabulous cuisine of the area, the Tourism Office from the Towm Hall began in 2007 the ‘I RUTA DE LA TAPA CIUDAD DE BERJA’. Celebrated over the 1st to the 4th November and coinciding with the VIII edition of ‘EXPOBERJA’. This pioneering initiative partook by twelve local establishments famous for their ‘tapa’ along with over 300 locals and foreigners eager to share in the experience. Proving highly popular, expect growth over future years.
