Natural Almería
Sierra Alhamilla

The Natural Area of Sierra Alhamilla, covering the coastal side of the Betica mountain ranges, next to the Sierras of Gádor and Cabrera, is a scarcely populated area which, among other activities, is ideal for walking.

A distinctive feature of its landscapeis the well-preserved forest of holm oaks, near to the Desert of Tabernas, which provides the province with a natural lung. The oak woods, together with other areas reforested with pines, provide a safe home for numerous birds of prey and mammals such as foxes, genets, and weasels. For its diversity of animal species, this area has been declared a ZEPA zone (a Special Bird Protection Zone) by the European Union.
