Natural Almería
Sierra Nevada

This natural area, the most rugged in Almería, with peaks reaching over 2,000 metres, stretches into neighbouring province of Granada.

Almeria's side of the Alpujarras has a distinctive natural character. The landscape displays great harmony between traditional agricultural uses and the natural vegetation, with water playing an extremely important role. In such a varied natural environment it is common to find forests of chestnuts and holm oaks sharing space with newly planted conifers. More striking still are the riverside forests, perched on the hillsides, so typical of the area.

The wealth of animal life in the Sierra Nevada is also evident. Of great interest is the unusual Spanish mountain goat, herds of which are to be found in the sierras, alongside boars and wild cats. In the skies above their kingdom soar great birds of prey like the golden eagle and the sparrow hawk. Trekking, hill walking, and mountain climbing are just a a few of the activities available.
